This month, I visited one of my favorite historical cities: Baltimore! I adore its architecture, seafood, and countless hidden gems. One of those gems is @hillenhomestead a Baltimore urban Flower Farm, I had the pleasure of learning about the owner Maya, and her incredible journey in creating a floral haven in the heart of the city.
🌸 Here are three amazing facts about this urban oasis:

1.Hillen Homestead is dedicated to growing sustainable cut flowers on two farm sites that were once vacant lots. Additionally using environmentally friendly practices no synthetic fertilizers/pesticides, and locally sourced compost. 🌿.

2. With over 80 varieties of flowers and foliage, this farm offers a stunning array of high quality blooms for local florists and the community 🌷🌼

3. Maya is deeply rooted in community , provides classes, gives bouquets to neighbors and shares seeds, compost, and plants with nearby gardeners. Truly fostering a sense of community heart of Baltimore. 🌟

Despite the rain, our Juneteenth Jubilee Floral Celebration at the historic Rado Market on Emancipation Avenue was a beautiful day filled with beautiful people! Every seat was filled ☺️🙏🏾. We’re starting a new tradition, bringing and giving 💐🌸 Third Ward its flowers. Inspired by the historic Juneteenth flower parade, our floral workshop bloomed with purpose and community.
Flowers have always held significance for Juneteenth, symbolizing freedom, beauty, and growth, much like Emancipation Park, which has been a central site for celebration since 1872. Truly honored to have hosted this event and grateful to everyone who joined us today! 🌻🫶🏾 Thank you, Rado Market, for serving and being a cherished part of the Houston community.

🌸Embracing spring vibes with my poppy obsession, perfect for my 70’s nostalgia 🤓 Symbolizing peace and loss, they’re truly special. The key to keeping these (short lived) beauties thriving: SINGING their stems. Check out the steps below:

1. Opt for buds just starting to open.
2. Trim stems for better water absorption.
3. Remove submerged leaves to prevent bacteria.
4. Use room temp water with preservative (or sugar).
5. Singe stems gently to seal sap and preserve freshness.
6. Change water daily, recut stems.
7. Keep cool (around 40°F, fridge works!) away from sunlight and drafts.
8. Enjoy your blooms!
